Kendo Club - 4414

The Columbia Kendo Club promotes the practice of kendo, a Japanese martial art practiced with shinai (bamboo swords) and bogu (protective armor). We actively participate in intercollegiate tournaments and take promotion tests to earn higher ranks. Beginners are welcome to try out a couple of classes at any time, however you must be affiliated with Columbia University and have a Dodge Fitness Center membership in order to participate in the club. Judo Club - 4416

Columbia University Judo Club is one of the oldest university Judo Clubs in the nation. Judo, which translates to "the gentle way" is a martial art that developed in Japan in the late 1800's but has gained a worldwide following. It was the first martial art to compete in the Olympics and today has one of the largest followings of any Olympic sport. Judo focuses on the practice of throws and the use of holds and leverage to unbalance the opponent. The goal of the Columbia Judo club is to foster a love for and educate students in the sport while engaging and preparing for collegiate competition.

The Shotokan Karate Club's goal is to practice Shotokan Karate as a martial art at the highest level. We are affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a non-profit, non-commercial organization with more than 100 clubs around North America, as well as affiliates in 13 countries overseas.
